The VR revolution has been 5 minutes away for 8 years

There needs to be some kind of plateau where VR becomes “good enough” for most people, without them listing the things they wish it offered after playing for a few minutes.

The technology of VR has come such a long way, but true acceptance won’t arrive until the hardware becomes a lot easier to navigate in the most common household environments, by ordinary folks who don’t study cable standards or want to have their face and head mussed up every time they want to play a game.

I’m not even going to unpack what all that means practically, just know that finding a good VR laptop, and matching it with a good headset, requires a lot of knowledge most people don’t have.

The problems with modern VR Photo: James Bareham/Polygon Current VR hardware, no matter how much it improves on previous designs or technology, is a trainwreck for anyone but people who like to build their own PCs.

Especially since people like older virtual reality enthusiasts like me are often so ready to praise the latest breakthrough: For all the exponential growth the technology has seen in just the last decade, as it exists right now, VR is still horrible.

Cheers! Wetherspoons boss Tim Martin goes back on full pay

Sarah Wilson, chief executive of corporate governance consultancy Minerva Analytics, said: 'Investors are already challenging investee companies to use Covid-19 as an opportunity to reset their thinking on a whole range of environmental, social and governance issues, and pay is one part of that.

Lucy Powell MP, shadow minister for business and consumers, said: 'Reports of rising executive pay will be a bitter pill to swallow for many low-paid key workers who have played a vital role during this coronavirus crisis, and for the many people who have lost their jobs.'

The pubs chief's pay boost may anger its 43,000 employees after 108 staff were made redundant from its head office, and 450 who work at six of its UK airport bars put at risk of losing their jobs.

The pubs group's founder and chairman slashed his £324,000-a-year salary in half in March but his pay quietly went back up again in August, The Mail on Sunday can reveal.

Wetherspoons boss Tim Martin is back on full pay after taking a pandemic pay cut – despite the pub chain crashing to its first annual loss since 1984.

We have to change Queensland': the environmental issues at stake in the election

During an online environment forum organised by QCC, the state’s environment minister, Leeanne Enoch, the LNP spokesman, David Crisafulli, and the Greens MP, Michael Berkman, debated the reef regulations, climate policy and the need for more protected areas.

Graziers and sugarcane growers are lining up against the Labor government’s new laws that will allow the state to control the amount of pollution running into reef catchments.

Crisafulli moved quickly to try to hose down fears an LNP government would lead to a weakening of the state’s land-clearing laws, the Vegetation Management Act.

Crisafulli has pledged that an LNP government would retain protections for land within 50 metres of a reef watercourse, with another category covering areas protected by covenants or used for offsets.

Heath says Queensland’s fame internationally as a place rich in species and natural wonders – from reefs to ancient rainforests – should put environmental protections central to policy debates.

Amphibious assault vehicles that sink are 'death traps' for the troops inside, Marine veterans say after fatal accident

Marines who conduct amphibious operations with AAVs have to go through some variation of the submerged vehicle egress training to prepare for the possibility that their vehicle will sink at sea.

"Until the investigation is complete, we don't know if the causal factors were related to the vehicle, the procedures, the training, the environment, or some combination of these," the Corps told Insider, declining to comment on whether or not it believes its AAVs are safe.

AAVs rarely sink and fatal mishaps are uncommon for the 26-ton tracked vehicles made to move Marines from warships at sea to shore under fire, but tragedy struck in late July when an amphibious vehicle sank rapidly to a depth of 385 feet off the coast of southern California during a training exercise.

A sinking Marine Corps amphibious assault vehicle is a "death trap" because of how hard it can be to get everyone out alive, Marine veterans told Insider after a deadly incident this summer.

Nine service members died this summer when a Marine Corps amphibious assault vehicle sank off the coast of California during a training exercise.

These Upcycled, Sustainable Designer Bags Are Honestly Better Than the Real Thing

But once Chiara and Matteo adjusted to their life in lockdown, they decided to refocus their efforts on sustainability in an incredibly smart, stylish way.

We started making bags with all the materials we had available at home [waste packaging and other materials like paper, plastic, and boxes] and posted them on Instagram to communicate our vision of a more sustainable environment.

We were so inspired by Chiara and Matteo's efforts that we asked them to show us the start-to-finish process of creating a bag, and they fashioned an exclusive design just for us: the Balenciaga Hourglass bag using DHL plastic envelopes.

Chiara said of the bag, which, you'll find, has a "POPSUGAR" label hidden on the interior lining when you scroll.

Ahead, check out the steps in Chiara and Matteo's careful construction, along with some of our other favorite bags they've made in the past months.

How Apple's iPhone 12 Pro could be setting the stage for the company's next major product

This year's iPad Pro and iPhone 12 Pro are among the first Apple hardware products designed to enable better AR performance, thanks to their LiDAR sensors.

Apple says the technology can help your iPhone quickly understand the surfaces in your environment, improving performance in augmented reality apps.

Both 5G and LiDAR are technologies that are critical for enabling augmented reality apps, and they're coming to the iPhone at a time when Apple is said to be developing AR glasses of its own.

Apple's iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max come with a LiDAR sensor and 5G, two technologies that can make the iPhone much better at running augmented reality apps.

But if the company does intend to launch an AR headset in 2022, building LiDAR tech into the iPhone today could certainly help developers create high-quality AR apps ahead of time — possibly laying the foundation for what's to come.

World-Renowned Chef Daniel Boulud Shares His Recipe For Success Amid COVID-19

While the move to outdoor dining may not have been as quick as other restaurants, Chef Boulud was very careful to ensure that his well-known quality and service were not diminished in the less-controlled outdoor environment.

Think outside the box … or the restaurant: On July 8 Daniel Boulud Kitchen at the Terrace opened for outdoor dining in front of his flagship restaurant, Daniel, and Bar Boulud.

The restaurant side is about the food and service, and the business side is about getting a guest to walk through your doors—and then getting that guest to come back again and again.

So, I did some research and connected with Daniel Boulud, the world-famous chef who lives in New York and has restaurants throughout the world.

Boulud says, “With many restaurants, including ours, having to close or be forced to limited capacities, we’ve found opportunities to evolve with new experiences for our guests and keep many of our team members employed through the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Amazon Prime Day Puts Retailers on the Defensive

Kohl’s, J.C. Penney, Walmart, Target and Bed, Bath Beyond are among those retailers triggering huge savings, new products and conveniences like contactless curbside pickups, and speedy deliveries, either in tandem with the Amazon promotion or a few days ahead, all to encourage consumers to get some holiday shopping done early, and distract them from the savings lure of Prime Day.

“This year, in a holiday season unlike any other, we know it’s more important than ever for our guests to get great deals in a convenient and safe shopping environment,” said Christina Hennington, executive vice president and chief merchandising officer, Target, in a recent statement.

The NPD Group said Monday that 57 percent of U.S. consumers have indicated they do some or possibly even all of their holiday shopping on the Amazon Prime Days event.

NPD’s annual holiday purchase intentions study, released Monday, indicates that almost as many consumers feel they will get better deals during Prime Days than on Black Friday, but Black Friday, the traditional start to holiday shopping, “still edges it out.”

According to NPD data, Amazon Prime Days held in July 2019, was the third largest shopping period of that year, behind Cyber Monday and Black Friday.

AI Assists With Better Battlefield Intel

RIS’s TITAN system combines commercial off-the-shelf technologies with battle-proven defense technology to provide users with uninterrupted access to data in contested environments, and to give them a clear picture of threats that evolve constantly.

Raytheon Intelligence Space demonstrated TITAN to the U.S. Army at the end of July 2020 as part of its proposal.

“The goal of TITAN is to link Army commanders at all echelons to timely intelligence data, speeding up the data-to-decision timeline,” said David Appel, vice president for Defense and Civil Solutions for Raytheon Intelligence Space, one of the four businesses that form Raytheon Technologies.

The Tactical Intelligence Targeting Access Node, or TITAN, offers frontline forces, as well as headquarter commanders, a resilient tactical ground station capable of rapidly sifting through massive amounts of incoming sensor data to find and track potential threats.

To ensure the TITAN solution continues to be effective as the future Joint All-Domain battlefield evolves, RIS designed the system for scalability using an open-architecture development approach.

Five years on, Israelis see few benefits from major gas deal

JERUSALEM (AP) - Five years after Israel signed a landmark agreement to develop large offshore gas fields over the objections of antitrust authorities, environmentalists and consumer advocates, ordinary Israelis have yet to see the windfall promised by the government.

But the financial benefits have yet to trickle down to Israeli consumers, who continue to pay stubbornly high electricity costs even as oil and gas prices have plunged in recent years.

That’s true for new contracts, but the price Israeli consumers pay is still largely determined by a 2012 contact between Tamar and the state-run Israel Electric Corporation, in which prices are tethered to the U.S. consumer price index and have steadily risen since 2015 to more than $6 per mmBTU, even as global prices have plunged.

He and other critics point to the IEC’s recent purchase of liquified natural gas on the international market for a lower price than it is getting from Israel’s own fields.

The U.S. Henry Hub price, seen as an international benchmark for natural gas purchases, has averaged around $2.75 per mmBTU over the past five years and fell below $2 after the pandemic caused a global drop in demand.

Climate change could tip the scales in these 6 toss-up House races

Grist once again looked at the Cook Political Report’s assessment of the most competitive House races and combined it with data from Yale’s Program on Climate Change Communication that measures the level of climate concern in each district.

Among the 26 races listed as toss-ups as of October 2, 2020, eight have higher levels of climate concern than the national average—where 62 percent of a district’s electorate is worried.

We chose to examine House races where environmental crises had altered the political landscape or candidates had notably different climate views that could divide voters.

It’s not surprising that this coastal New York district is the toss-up race where voters are most worried about climate change—it includes the southern portion of Brooklyn and all of Staten Island, which was completely reshaped by Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

As a Republican, Van Drew has been much less vocal on climate issues, but his congressional campaign website flaunts a 2018 bill he wrote banning offshore drilling in the state.

India Becomes First Nation to Get 8 'Blue Flag' Beaches in a Row. Here's What the Eco-label Means

Japan, South Korea and the UAE are the only other Asian nations who have been conferred with a couple of Blue Flag beaches, however, in a time frame of about five to six years, a statement by the government read.

Spain has the highest number of Blue Flag beaches at 578, followed by Turkey where 436 beaches now hold the eco-label.

Given by the non-governmental organisation (NGO) the Foundation for Environmental Education, the Blue Flag is a well-recognised voluntary eco-label given to a beach, marina, or sustainable boating tourism operator which meets its standards.

Javadekar said it was a 'proud and outstanding moment' for India as no other Blue Flag country had ever been awarded the certification for eight beaches in a single attempt.

Eight Indian beaches have received the 'coveted' Blue Flag certification, announced Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Prakash Javadekar in a tweet on Sunday.

Interview: IFAD's president says rural areas are key to fighting global hunger and poverty

(Photo by Tomislav Georgiev/Xinhua) A former prime minister of the western African nation of Togo, Houngbo pointed out that his home continent has suffered more from poverty and hunger than other parts of the world -- even before the vast impacts of the global coronavirus outbreak.

"We have to make sure food supply chains work for all vulnerable people, from small-scale producers to billions of consumers," Houngbo said, noting that IFAD is the only multilateral fund specifically dedicated to fighting poverty and hunger in rural areas.

"Many people associate poverty and food insecurity with slums and urban areas, but poverty and hunger are actually deepest in rural areas," Houngbo said.

Gilbert F. Houngbo, since 2017 president of the United Nations fund best known as IFAD, told Xinhua in an exclusive interview that the only effective strategy for fighting global hunger is to address the problem in rural areas.

(Photo by Zhao Dongshan/Xinhua) Houngbo also spoke about the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), a kind of "blueprint" toward a more sustainable future, including a reduction in poverty and hunger, better education, more gender equality, and better environmental health, all by 2030.
