10 Things To Try In December

But I never realized QUITE how wonderful this cream was until something went wrong with my skin.

Friends, it was an allergic reaction — I'm fairly certain it was to the lanolin in the cream, which is a pretty rare skin allergen but....I'm allergic to a LOT a LOT of things and have some eczema issues as well.

So naturally I immediately ordered a fresh jar of the CeraVe cream (I had run out right before trying the new cream), screamed a little, and sat on my hands so I wouldn't itch my face as my skin healed.

TL;DR: CeraVe night cream really is fabulous, whether you have dry winter skin, combo skin, or your skin just needs some hardcore TLC after something goes awry.

"I've been using this CeraVe night cream for almost the whole year, and I have loved it the whole time.

Moderna, Inc. (MRNA) CEO Stéphane Bancel Presents at NASDAQ 43rd Virtual Investor Conference (Transcript

We've got quite a number of calls in the last few weeks once data got out, but still I would say – I think the U.S. has done the best job that I have seen, and I've not talked to every country in the world.

So I guess that leads to the other question, which is you've set a bar in terms of supply 500 million to 1 billion doses for next year.

We will not have been able to fund $1 billion to run the 30,000 people for Phase III study if the U.S. government had not helped us.

So let me start at the starting point, which is – on Monday, we filed the same data to all the key regulatory agencies around the world, so U.S., Canada, UK, Europe, Switzerland, Singapore, Israel, and WHO.

You know, given we've done all the studies in the U.S. FDA has seen preclinical models, challenge models, Phase I, Phase II data.

Drone Footage Shows the Shocking Collapse of the Arecibo Observatory

Iwastheone shares a report from The Verge: Today, the National Science Foundation (NSF) released shocking footage of the collapse of the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico.

The video, captured on December 1st, shows the moment when support cables snapped, causing the massive 900-ton structure suspended above Arecibo to fall onto the observatory's iconic 1,000-foot-wide dish.

The collapse also brought down the tops of the three support towers surrounding Arecibo, where the cables had been connected to keep the platform in the air.

The videos of the collapse were captured by a camera located in Arecibo's Operations Control Center, as well as from a drone located above the platform at the time of collapse.

"On December 1, the platform of the 305-meter radio telescope at Arecibo Observatory suffered a catastrophic collapse," the petition states.

Collapse of massive Arecibo telescope captured on video

'It sounded like a rumble' The collapse stunned many scientists who had relied on what had been the largest single-dish radio telescope in the world until it was overtaken by China's FAST observatory in recent years.

(Arecibo Observatory)A drone used to monitor the telescope since the snapping of cables in previous months captured the moment the receiver fell and the 305-metre-wide reflector dish collapsed under the debris.

The US National Science Foundation (NSF), which owns the observatory, said initial findings of the collapse on December 1 indicated that the top section of all three of the telescope's support towers broke off and that as the instrument platform fell, support cables also plummeted.

The dramatic collapse of one of the largest single-dish radio telescopes in the world has been captured on camera, showing cables exploding and a 900-tonne receiver platform plummeting onto the reflector dish below.

Physicists Nail Down the 'Magic Number' That Shapes the Universe

Today, in a new paper in the journal Nature, a team of four physicists led by Saida Guellati-Khelifa at the Kastler Brossel Laboratory in Paris reported the most precise measurement yet of the fine-structure constant.

[...] The constant is everywhere because it characterizes the strength of the electromagnetic force affecting charged particles such as electrons and protons.

Numerically, the fine-structure constant, denoted by the Greek letter a (alpha), comes very close to the ratio 1/137.

Muller said of his rival's new measurement of alpha, "A factor of three is a big deal.

Natalie Wolchover writes via Quanta Magazine: As fundamental constants go, the speed of light, c, enjoys all the fame, yet c's numerical value says nothing about nature; it differs depending on whether it's measured in meters per second or miles per hour.

Westpac pledges to clean up act

The country’s second largest bank has agreed to a court enforceable undertaking (CEU) with the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) to overhaul its risk culture and oversight of financial crimes.

APRA identified that Westpac’s customer outcomes and risk program were not far reaching enough to address the full extent of the risk governance failings.

The integrated plan required by the CEU must be designed to deliver the sustainable risk governance step change that APRA requires.”

APRA deputy chair John Lonsdale said the CEU would ensure the risk governance restructure at Westpac would meet standards.

APRA said it expressed concern over the bank’s progress in remediating structural weaknesses that included “immature and reactive” risk culture, unclear accountabilities, capability shortfalls and inadequate oversight.

Relief for America's unemployed could be crucial for health

"It's a pretty good idea, not only from the point of view of the impact the stimulus will have on the economy, but that it will actually improve the health of people who are suffering from financial strain due to the COVID pandemic," she added.

This study shows why extending unemployment benefits would serve as a powerful weapon in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, said Dr. Lynne Richardson.

The researchers compared the financial and health problems of people receiving unemployment benefits against those of people who lost income from the pandemic but weren't on unemployment.

People on unemployment were less likely to lose their health insurance or skip health care because they couldn't afford it.

These findings should prompt Congress to find a way to maintain the extension of unemployment insurance created by the CARES Act earlier this year, said Cheryl Fish-Parcham, director of access initiatives at Families U.S., a national nonpartisan consumer health care advocacy organization.

The Sun emitted its biggest solar flare in years

The most powerful solar flare in three years was expelled by the Sun on Sunday.

Ultraviolet and x-ray radiation was expelled from the M4.4 flare, which ionized the top of Earth’s atmosphere.

However, this could be because the sun itself blocked off some of the expulsion, with Dr Phillips suggesting that because the blast site was behind the sun’s southeastern part its body may have eclipsed some of the flare – meaning it could have been an X-class event.

In September the sun entered a new solar cycle, which usually brings with it an increase in large flares such as this one.

If such a blast had hit the Earth, however, the planet could experience a strong geomagnetic storm; and since the sunspot that originated the flare will rotate onto the Earthside face of the sun in a few days, such an event may be incoming in the week.

You need to see the Full Beaver Moon tonight

This week, we're asking you to marvel at the Beaver Full Moon as it appears opposite of the Sun, shining at its brightest in the night sky.

Whether it be the Full Moon, a meteor shower, or just the best night to see Mars, we're here to direct your eyes skyward and tell you to look up and appreciate the wonders of space from Earth.

This month's Full Moon also happens to be a penumbral lunar eclipse, where the Earth cast its shadow on the Moon.

A Full Moon takes place when the Earth is wedged between the Sun and the Moon at exactly opposite ends with the side of the Moon facing the Earth becoming fully illuminated by the Sun’s beaming light.

November's Full Moon is supposedly called the Beaver Moon because it falls around the same time of year when beavers begin to take shelter in their lodges and hibernate for the winter ahead by storing lots of food.

Duck! Meteor! Oh, Maybe Don't Bother - This Time...

There will be another close-pass, and an impact, one day.

The object has been given a formal name of 2020 VT4 unless the discoverers at the ATLAS Mauna Loa Observatory choose to give it a name ("COVID", or "hair-parter", or "hats-off", perhaps.

For those who know what an MPEC is [a Minor Planet Electronic Circular], Bill Grey has written up one of his "pseudo-MPECs" with links to other work on this object here, while the actual discovery record is here.

Nobody noticed the asteroid whizzing past just above the Earth's atmosphere (for certain values of "above" including "not very far" and "373km above ground").

And with another 39 projected Earth approaches before the next turn-of-century, it's pretty obvious that one day this is going to hit us.

Best Black Friday LG Gram 14 Deals 2020

There have been some especially hot laptop bargains among this year’s Amazon Black Friday deals and this 14-inch LG Gram is one of the hottest, with a $453 discount letting you score one right now for just $1,147.

The LG Gram laptops came onto the scene about five years ago, around the same time that slimmed-down ultrabooks were becoming a thing, and the line has matured nicely since then.

Its 14-inch 1080p display is a great size for productivity and entertainment, and at just over two pounds and 0.7 inches thick, the LG Gram 14 is thin and light enough to carry around all day without wearing you out or taking up too much space in your bag (or on your desk, for that matter).

For its Black Friday sale, Amazon has this updated 2020 LG Gram 14 on sale for a tidy $453 markdown, letting you make this sturdy ultrabook your daily companion for just $1,147 while this deal lasts (which won’t be long).

Best Black Friday Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 Deals for 2020

The Microsoft Surface series started as a line of tablets but it didn’t take long until the stable was expanded with some laptops.

The Surface Laptop 3 is perhaps the most traditional member of the family: It sports a more standard (albeit very slim and streamlined) laptop design in contrast to the tablet and 2-in-1 Surface devices, and its build quality is absolutely rock solid.

This configuration of the Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 normally goes for $1599, but this discount is one of the best Black Friday laptop sales we’ve seen so far.

For its Black Friday sale, Amazon has this third-gen Surface Laptop marked down to $1200 — the lowest price we’ve seen for this model — giving you a nice $399 savings.

The Battle of Ypres: Canada's Crazy Entry Into WWI

Interestingly enough, the first casualties were three German soldiers who were killed when Allied shells struck some of the cylinders, releasing the gas behind German lines.

It was good that the Canadians were quick learners, for they were soon transferred to General Sir Horace Smith-Dorrien’s 2nd Army, stationed in the center of the 17-mile-deep Ypres Salient held by Allied troops in northwest Belgium.

There, the British 1st Army under General Douglas Haig nearly achieved a startling breakthrough of the German lines, only to falter from faulty communications and lack of support.

Worn out from a long night of stringing barbed wire and repairing trenches in the infamous Ypres Salient of the Allied front, the men lounged at ease in their forward positions.

Astronomers Discover New 'Fossil Galaxy' Buried Deep Within the Milky Way

[...] Stars originally belonging to Heracles account for roughly one third of the mass of the entire Milky Way halo today -- meaning that this newly-discovered ancient collision must have been a major event in the history of our galaxy.

Over its ten-year observational life, APOGEE has measured spectra for more than half a million stars all across the Milky Way, including its previously dust-obscured core.

"That is especially hard to do for stars in the center of the Milky Way, because they are hidden from view by clouds of interstellar dust.

fahrbot-bot shares a report from Phys.Org: Scientists working with data from the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys' Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) have discovered a 'fossil galaxy' hidden in the depths of our own Milky Way.

To separate stars belonging to Heracles from those of the original Milky Way, the team made use of both chemical compositions and velocities of stars measured by the APOGEE instrument.

I Made A Vegetarian "Meat" Pie To See If It Would Taste Like The Real Thing

Food ·Posted on 19 Nov 2020 I Made A Vegetarian "Meat" Pie To See If It Would Taste Like The Real Thing Honestly, it was an experience.

Clare Aston / BuzzFeed Thankfully, I researched some of the sauces before I went to the shops, 'cause I found out that normally Worcestershire sauce isn't vegetarian — it has anchovies.

NBC The best thing about the whole experience was that it took away that fear, that if I were to eat only plant-based meat, then I would miss out on food that I know and love.

It might be just a teeny first step towards eating more plant-based foods and I'm not going to become vegan or vegetarian overnight — but I've come away from this experience with the resolve to eat less meat overall and isn't that a good thing?

According to Google, I'd need Worcestershire sauce, an onion, two types of pastry, flour, beef stock cubes, BBQ and tomato sauce (to go inside the pie) and, of course, mince.

Place turkey on a large rimmed baking sheet and rub all over with oil and sprinkle cavity and all over outside with salt, then do the same with spice mixture.

If using a grill, set up for indirect heat (place coals on one side of grill or use gas on one side only).

If using a kamado grill, use a heat deflector and maintain heat at 350 degrees.

When grill is ready, place turkey on grate away from the heat, with no part of the turkey directly over the coals or the gas.
