Police said the bicyclist was killed Tuesday around 7:05 p.m. in front of The Salvation Army Kroc Center when he was struck by the driver of a red Toyota Prius driving west on University Avenue.

The bicyclist was headed west on the sidewalk when he turned in front of the car at Alamo Drive, according to a statement from Sgt. Kevin Gibson.

After the collision, the driver allegedly got out of his car, picked up and moved the victim back into the roadway before getting back in his Prius and driving off.

Shortly before 9:15 p.m., police arrested Abbas Karama Shariff on Central Avenue near Florine Drive in Lemon Grove.

No details about the arrest were released other than the fact the man was contacted on the street, said police spokesman Billy Hernandez.
